Bill's Corner
Here we are in the chill of things and people buzzing in every direction. Tis the season. The holidays are ahead of us and the New Year. That time where we make resolutions (and break them), renew pledges and just be thankful we all made it through this trip around the sun. And lets hope you keep your health. They say 47 million people are waiting for O’Bamacare. By the time they get it, they’ll be ready for Medicare. And his rating has dropped to 37%. The only way it could go any lower is if he became a member of Congress. The healthcare adds on TV are unbelievable. On some of these new medicines it takes a minute to explain the benefits and five minutes to give its’ side effects. I like the one that says “If you experience death or near death, you may be entitled to compensation.” An elderly man who had a large family and could not hear was fitted with a brand new technical device by his doctor and immediately he could hear again. The man was overjoyed and the doctor said come back in one month. Upon returning, the doctor asked the man what his family said of the good news. The man replied “I didn’t tell them.” The doctor said why not? The man replied, I’ve been having such a great time listening to all the different conversations, and I’ve changed my will three times.
The club is pretty busy with its’ winter functions. A setback tournament is scheduled for Feb. 7, 2014  and the Ladies Night Dinner Dance is on the following Friday Feb. 14, which is Valentines Day. So bring your sweetheart and have a good meal and a good time.  A federal judge has decreed that spying is unconstitutional. Does this mean that Nathan Hale will be stripped from all the history books in school? I wonder what George Washington, Ben Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and the other 35 signers of the Constitution would say to that. A holiday just past that has a great meaning for us veterans and left me somewhat disappointed. I was driving around on Veterans Day and noticed after a while something was missing. Where are all the flags?
The flag means something special to me. Sure, there are parades and people saying thanks, and free meals and honors at different places, but they all point to one thing, the flag. They say just before you die, your whole life passes before you. When I stare at the flag, its whole history flashes before me. Betsey Ross, Fort Sumter, Tripoli, Iwo Jima, all the wars, the ships, the planes, the armies, parades, memorials, uniforms and above all the hundreds of thousands who gave their lives for it. They paid a debt they did not owe. We owe them a debt we cannot pay. Everyone in the world knows our flag and its significance to strength and freedom, whether it’s a parade at home or the Olympics in another country. It is the only flag in the world where people pledge allegiance to it with their hand on their heart. It is the only flag where everything on it, including its colors has a meaning to the freedom it portrays. It is one of the few things you can look at anywhere and smile and get a tear in your eye at the same time. It flies high above all things, but will lower itself for a fallen comrade. It will let you wave it on a stick when you first start to walk, and will cover you in reverence on your final journey. So display the stars and stripes with pride, and when you look at it, smile and say “YES”
Wishing the best of holidays to all of you, until the next time, have a good month and have a good life.
